Reducing House Flood Damage
Changes to your house that will minimise the damage caused by flooding include:
Fitting non-return valves on drains and inlet water pipes, which will prevent contaminated water from entering.
Replacing fitted carpets with ceramic tiles on the ground floor of your house. If you want a softer floor material, use rugs that can be removed from rooms if necessary.
Central heating boilers should be sited as high as possible to be clear of any possible flood damage. The same principle applies to the house ventilation system.
Older kitchen cupboards made of chipboard are especially vulnerable to water damage. Consider replacing them with stainless steel or plastic units that are freestanding and can be easily removed.
Wooden windows and doors on the lower floor of your house will suffer the most damage from water so consider replacing them with synthetic substitutes.
