PROPERTY TAX CHANGES IN 2015
UP TO 15% REDUCTION LIKELY?
COUNCIL BY COUNCIL FUNDING
A recent Sunday Business Post article outlined the problems facing 25 councils in implementing an up to 15% cut in Local Property Tax rates for the 2015 fiscal year. Each council is allowed to retain 80% of the LPT collected within their area, with the intention being that the remaining 20% is used to assist weaker funded councils in the rest of Ireland.
The LPT was originally designed to replace the government funded general purpose grants allocated to each council.
As the table below shows however, 25 councils cannot afford to reduce LPT by 15% without imposing severe cutbacks in basic public services such as libraries, pothole repair and streetlight reductions.
